My Need to Read

I love to explore genre fiction, and while I usually go for books with a romantic thread running through it, I just love great character and world building. And since I can hardly stand to let go of my favorite characters, I like series.

Storm Front - Jim Butcher For me, this book was thoroughly "OK." Decent as far as series openers go. Sadly, I couldn't really find my way into caring one way or the other about Harry's adventure. For one, it was rather slow. There were coincidences aplenty, enough to stretch even my (usually considerable) suspension of disbelief. And at times I found Harry's inner dialogues repetitive and tiring. I remember thinking to myself at one point, "Okay, I get it, yer in trouble and have no solutions...yer friends are MIA or against you, the Council hates you, yer gonna die a gruesome death...for the hundredth time I get it!" I usually don't get overly annoyed by redundant commentary...but when a bear walks into the middle of a crowded camp fire circle and someone says "look, there's a bear, we're in trouble," they can expect to get a few "no shat, Sherlock" looks (well, along with the expected running around and screaming, that is). Multiply that by like, fifty, and that's how I felt by book's end. :o)But again, not a bad book overall. There were a few fun and interesting action scenes (especially near the end), and I dug Harry's "normal guy" vibe (well, in the context of UF). He's not some macho, suave, know-it-all superhero type, which is refreshing. I can see falling for Harry over the course of some more books.
